You can’t use the \translate command to set different texts for
bookmarks because it is unexpandable.
What you can do is to use language dependent

Hi Hans,
you're experimental translate module for MkIV is very nice and
makes it for german users very easy to avoid ligatures in certain
words. What I don't like is to that I have to escape the bar
in the replacement text, can't you take care of this in the
\translateinput macro itself and save
